“I’m thinking about starting an Online Directory”


Just met another person looking to start an online directory. I didn’t want to be rude or anything, but I looked at him and simply asked, “why?”

I think to myself, has he never heard of Google? Or Angie’s List? Or Yelp!? Or for you 25 percenters, Bing? Why would you ever try to start an online directory when Google has become a verb!? In order for an online directory to work, you have to have traffic: visits, hits, return users. While not an online directory, Google is essentially a phone book.

So, he gives me his pitch, “Free business directory, free business network, free referral system, and we’ll give you a free website.” Again I asked, “why?” Thinking, I have a website already.

Success through failure and Batman quotes


There are a million quotes you could use to summarize why failing is an important aspect of achieving success. My generation will be remembered for many reasons, not the least of which is social media and comic books turned into movies. So, it’s only appropriate that I quote Batman Begins as why failing is important. “And why do we fall, Bruce?” Thomas Wayne asks his frightened son. “So we can learn to pick ourselves up.”

Not everyone is good at everything. Failing has the ability to enlighten areas of improvement. The key comes from being able to recognize why failure occurred. If every time Bruce fell he simply blamed it on the environment, he would never adjust his feet to walking or learn to tie his shoes more securely. Failing is almost essential to achieving success in business, life, love and whatever else you can think of. It helps you build a foundation for moving mountians.

Worst Sales Strategy. Ever.


Yelling into the phone.

Seriously, I can hear you. You don’t have to yell. I have to doubt that strategy has worked.

“So this telemarketer called me and yelled into the phone. And I bought everything he was selling,” said no one ever.

Telemarketing by definition isn’t a good strategy. One that’s made even worse by trying to yell your case over the phone.

Having your cake and eating it too


When it comes to marketing expenses, you can’t expect to spend zero dollars on marketing your business and still expect to set sales records.

Restaurants are a perfect example of this at play in the real world. Understandably, it costs a ridiculous amount of money to start a restaurant. From renovation fees to obtaining licenses, opening a restaurant can be a huge investment. In fact, did a survey and found the average cost to start a restaurant was $451,966.  It’s no surprise that once an owner is finished spending nearly half a million dollars they’re reluctant to invest anymore into the business.

But that’s just it. You don’t drop half a million into a venture without expecting an eventual return on that investment. Marketing is just a way to protect the investment.

Do What You Love


Doing what you love for a living is important. For many, it’s impractical but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. So, here are a few tips for doing what you love for a living.

First, if you can’t get a job doing what you love, I suggest volunteering. Obtaining experience is key. If you’re a graphic designer, for example, reach out to non-profits to do their designs. They are always in need of someone to do graphic work.

Second, become educated. This doesn’t always mean attending a four year university. But any kind of education in the field you love will help your resume. Even if it’s just a few classes at a community college.

Finally, keep learning. If you love working in a recording studio don’t just fall in love with one board and one way of recording music. Stay versatile and commit to staying up to speed on the latest (and in some cases, the previous) technologies.
