I go to the movies probably 1-2 times a year. I saw The Avengers this year. I will probably see The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. That’s 2 more than I saw in the theater last year.
I love movies, so why don’t I see more in the theater? The same reasons as everyone else: it’s too expensive (there’s no way soda is $4.00 for 16oz. Ever.), people are obnoxious (cell phones, talking, etc.), and you can’t pause it to use the restroom.
Movie theaters, like a lot of other concepts – television, radio, shopping malls – had their day, but in today’s landscape are a bit irrelevant. What would TV be like if it were invented today? Would there even be commercials? What would the movie experience be like if it were invented today knowing it had to compete against Blu-Ray, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes etc?
My guess is that the movie theater would have the best screen/projector technology available. It would have the best sound, the best seats, the best food, and would be reasonably priced. In fact, like a baseball game, maybe you could even bring your own food. It certainly wouldn’t be stained seats, loud teenagers, poor quality audio/video and high priced food.
Or, maybe it would look something like this (apologies for the f-bombs).
So, have you thought about what you’re doing (work, school, life) and is it relevant in today’s world?
